About
In December 2019, TTW ‘adopted’ this little strip of land on behalf of the town council, who hold the license for it from the Highways Agency.
Along with the local residents, the team decided to create a small community orchard here. Also, in line with the Somerset Council’s 10-year Pollinator Action Plan, TTW began to scythe, scarify and sow wildflower seed on this patch, clearing away most of the nettles and brambles and maintaining it for maximum biodiversity.
Directions
This community orchard is along the footpath between Post Close TA21 9AN and Monument Close TA21 9AL. The side entrance to Wellesley Park school is at the end of Post Close and so it can get very congested around the school run times. What3words: mirroring.candle.freedom. Please walk or cycle if at all possible.
Design
In consultation with local residents, the team chose varieties of fruit trees for the site: apple, pear and cherry. 8 trees were planted, and existing trees pruned and maintained.
Implementation
Regular community gardening sessions are held on site, to keep a check on the brambles and nettles, to scythe at appropriate times of year, and to keep the edges of the pathway mown as this is a regular and well-used path to and from the primary school nearby.
We’re always happy to welcome new volunteers, so do get in touch if you’d like to help! And check on the calendar and with our regular monthly newsletters and ‘What’s On’ emails for upcoming gardening sessions here, and across all our many sites. Everyone is welcome, and experience is not necessary.
Biodiversity
Seeing beauty in wild places is what we are all about. The tall waving grasses and abundant seedheads that can be seen beneath the fruit trees at Post Close are a wonderful example of how pleasing a little roughness and wildness can be. People have been inspired to introduce wildflowers and unkempt corners in their own gardens – and been rewarded by the numbers of birds, insects and butterflies that they see – perhaps even a hedgehog or two!
Check out our Gardening for Wildlife booklet for more ideas about how you can help to make Wellington a welcoming home to all creatures.
