Oral history project

International Oral History of the Transition Movement : Wellington
In 2022, the Oral History Society launched a project to document and record interviews with people all over the world who have been involved with the Transition Movement. This is a key project for the OHS special interest group on Environment and Climate Change, and features groups from France, the US, Sweden and Norway, and the UK.

The Wellington team have completed 26 interviews, and took portraits of each of the 26 interviewees. We deposited the audio files and the image files along with all the paperwork, permission forms, transcripts and summaries at the end of summer 2025 in to the South West Heritage Trust for permanent archive.

Why?

– The Transition movement is an important actor in the struggle to reduce reliance on fossil fuels and reduce local and global inequalities

– To encourage and inspire local activism, and improve people’s mental health

– To capture the real, personal stories that lie at the heart of Transition

– To reflect and build on the principles of the movement itself

– No oral history of the Transition Movement exists

2025 update

  • In May 2025, the team at University of Virginia Tech a website showcasing some of the interviews from the US, TTW and France was launched. Check it out on the Transition Towns site
  • In June 2025, the international project was presented at the Oral History Society’s annual conference in Glasgow. We are grateful to Padmini Broomfield and Rib Davis for showcasing our work!
  • The team has completed the archiving process and is now working on putting together an exhibition of the TTW project, with portraits of each of the interviewees. We would like to thank everyone involved for putting their time, energy and enthusiasm into this project and look forward to sharing it more widely very soon. Thank you for sharing your stories!
