Green Corridor, Wellington

About

In January 2023, Wellington Town Council took over the management of this 62.5 acre area of land known as the Green Corridor on a 150-year lease from Somerset West and Taunton (now Somerset) Council. The area of land stretches from Fox’s Field at Tonedale Mill through to the Basins and then over to Rockwell Green and Hilly Head. The railway crossing links it to Linden Meadow, a field that the Town Council purchased in 2022, which then links the land to Westford bringing the total land area of the Green Corridor to 66 acres. Working with partners, such as TTW, the council aims to ensure that the land remains available for public use and that it is used it to promote recreation, healthy lifestyles, local food growing and the development of arts and cultural spaces.

Implementation

The Green Corridor Land Management Plan will ensure that the land remains available for public use and use it to promote recreation, healthy lifestyles, local food growing (see below) and the development of arts and cultural spaces. The plan will honour existing agreements and licences with community groups to carry out work on those areas of land covered by any agreement for example Transition Town Wellington (TTW) and Fox’s Field. Part of the plan will cover the community farm, established and run by Wellington Community Food.

Biodiversity

The Green Corridor Land Management Plan requires the land will enhance biodiversity and reduce the town’s carbon footprint through planting more trees and wildflower meadows to sequester carbon and create a more biodiverse and resilient environment. This will also help with natural flood management and healthier soil. It will also increase the amount of viable habitat for wildlife in the area helping natural ecosystems to thrive. It will also ensure that access to the land is safe.

Green Corridor plan

This plan indicates the extent of the Green Corridor, with the railway line separating Fox’s Field from the remainder of the corridor. There is access under the railway so the whole area is connected.

Below you will find a video made by Wellington Town Council which explains where the Green Corridor is, and what it is. It shows all the areas that make up the corridor from a drone. Whilst watching the drone footage you can also see on a small map where the drone is filming at any point during the video.

If you are not familiar with the Green Corridor, this video is a great introduction. At the start it presents a brief outline of the purpose of the Green Corridor and how the Wellington Town Council has taken over the management of the land on a 150-year lease.
