More Wellington Awards
It has been award time again in Wellington!
In June The Campaign to Protect Rural England (CPRE) gave awards to several sites in Wellington. These awards were created as part of the CPRE’s 100th anniversary. The aim being to highlight projects that help to protect and regenerate the environment. Transition Town Wellington and Wellington Town Council (in partnership with the Woodland Trust), received awards in the Blue or Green Spaces category. The awards were in recognition of Fox’s Field and the Green Corridor Woodland Creation Scheme.
Judges were impressed with the high level of community involvement at Fox’s Field as well as the regular monitoring of species, which allows Transition Town Wellington to scientifically log the impact of their work. For the Green Corridor Woodland Creation Scheme, judges noted the positive collaboration with the Woodland Trust and the detailed ecological research and site planning. They also praised the involvement of the local community and the many hours put in by volunteers.
In addition, Wellington has been the recipient of four Green Flag Awards. These were awarded to four sites – Fox’s Field, Swains Lane Nature Reserve, Wellington Park and Wellington Basins. Wellington Park received a Heritage Green Flag Award, receiving international recognition through the Green Flag Award Scheme. Swains Lane, Fox’s Field and the Basins received Community Green Flag Awards.
Wellington Town Council’s Open Spaces Manager, Darren Hill was delighted with the results. He was grateful for the hard work these awards represented. The park is looked after by the council’s grounds maintenance team. The other three sites are looked after by volunteers. TTW being responsible for Fox’s Field and Swains Lane Nature Reserve. The Friends of the Basins looking after that area.
Darren added: “These awards are a testament to the commitment of everyone involved in maintaining high-quality, safe, welcoming, and environmentally sustainable parks and green spaces for residents and visitors alike.”
