London recommends RTG
It has been announced recently that the London Assembly recommends Right to Grow. Incredible Edible are the organisation that started the Right to Grow (RTG) initiative. This encourages local authorities to make suitable, unused plots of land available to the community to grow food or to turn into wildlife habitats. This is often land that is costing the local authority money to maintain. A Right to Grow also requires local authorities to maintain a free, accessible map of all public land that is suitable for community cultivation or wildlife projects. The authorities also need to make it straight-forward for community groups to secure free leases to cultivate the land, and allow those groups to bid for the land should the authority decide to sell it.
RTG is spreading through various local authorities. A recent RTG Learning Network Session explains what is happing in the city of Hull. Hull was one of the first authorities to adopt RTG.
There is a similar learning session concentrating on London. The news that the London Assembly recommends Right to Grow is significant.
