Walking and cycling
There are plans to improve Walking and Cycling in Wellington. Somerset Council has a strategy for developing sustainable transport, part of which will be an expansion of the ‘active travel’ network. Active travel means walking, cycling and wheeling, which includes wheelchair users.
To this end the council has published a number of Local Cycling and Walking Infrastructure Plans (LCWIP) for a selection of towns, including Wellington. Search for LCWIPs on the Somerset Council website to see the whole 29 page plan.
Wellington’s plan states that the town is close to strategic transport networks ie: the M5, the GWR main railway line and Route 3 of the National Cycle Network. It also states that reopening a railway station ‘is a key opportunity’ for the town and surrounding area, and that the aim is for local residents to be able to reach the station using an active travel route.
The plan’s aim is to secure funding over the next decade for the establishment of new safe routes, and will evolve over that time period, a process that will need feedback from the public. To contribute visit Somerset Council’s Local Cycling and Walking Infrastructure Plans.
