Wellington Wassail 2026
On Saturday 17 January the Wellington Folk and Customs Society will hold the annual Wassail. Wassailing is an ancient practice of blessing the fruit trees and drinking and singing to the health of the trees. It is hoped that by doing this they will provide a full harvest. The word wassail comes from the Anglo Saxon Waes Haeil, which means good health. Many Wassailing songs are included in song and carol books. One of the better known ones is entitled the Somerset Wassail.
Meet at the Cottage Inn in Champford Lane at 19:30. There will be the banging of drums, pots and pans and singing around a fire. All to ward off evil (‘Maulscrawl’) spirits. Above is a picture of this event in 2025.
