Renewables increase

New government statistics show that over 53% of the UK’s electricity was produced from renewables in the first quarter of 2026. This is the highest amount so far. The increase was largely the result of increased wind generation. This increased to 60.8% of all renewable generation. Low carbon, which also includes nuclear energy reached 63.8% of the total amount of electricity generated. At the same time fossil fuels reduced to 32.8%.

Ana Musat, the executive director of policy and engagement at RenewableUK said “Renewable energy continues to break records, and these latest figures further underline its position as the backbone of our power system. Wind has once again led the way, with a significant increase that has seen it comprehensively outstrip costly and volatile gas. This progress has been driven in part by the ongoing rollout of projects across the country and is only set to increase as we prepare for the Government’s next clean energy auction, which is set to open in just a few weeks and will see record levels of offshore capacity eligible to bid.”

It is encouraging to see that progress is being made in the UK towards green energy. These figures include the small scale micro-generation, such as domestic solar panels. Home owners can help with this progression by installing micro-generation, such as solar or a small wind turbine. There is some more information on the renewables page. We also recently reported on Great British Energy’s Local power Plan, which is intended to encourage locally owned green energy generation. These will all help to increase renewables generation and reduce reliance on fossil fuels.
