TTW Bookworms meeting

This month we are focussing on “A black fox running” by Brian Carter. Written in 1981, this is a classic of nature writing that has recently been re-published. In her new foreword, Melissa Harrison describes how, being read the book as a child, ‘the story of the Dartmoor Hill foxes entered my imagination and put down roots far deeper than anything else I’ve since read about the natural world…’

Set just after WW2, it portrays a scarred humanity and a vulnerable but proud fox community. The hero of the story is Wulfgar, a handsome dark fox, whose wits are pitted against the trapper Scoble and his lurcher. The writing is gripping and beautiful, full of lyrical detail in its depiction of the natural world. Carter brings us convincingly into the perspective of his fox protagonists. We experience their hardships and joys, relations and interactions, and the complex sensory textures of their Dartmoor world.

Our Bookworms meetings are open to everyone and are always very relaxed and sociable. You don’t need to have come before or even read the book, the evening focusses on lively discussion. Please feel free to recommend other media such as films and articles to others! Please ring Sue beforehand on 07896 031236 if you’d like to come.
