So what is the Sustainable food group and why are we running these events?
Transition Town Wellington's original core group of people, who were running all the projects to start with, eventually had enough people to form a subgroup. This is the Sustainable Food Group, which formed in September 2013. We concentrate on all the food related projects, leaving the other TTW members to have more time in their meeting to discuss renewable energy and recycling projects etc. We have just starting to run a Make Do and Mend Sewing Group, although this is still in its early stages, so hopefully in time we will have lots more people join the groups, so we can form lots of different subgroups to help run different projects.
As the Sustainable Food Group, we have done lots of events, including a Bread Making Day in April, a Soup Making session in September, an Apple Juicing Day at the beginning of October, a Chutney Making Day at the end of October, and Christmas Events in November.
We also run four talks a year on How to Grow Organic Vegetables, a Seed Swap in February, plus we are starting a project to Plant Fruit Trees/Bushes and Nut Trees around Wellington for the community to use, with a map showing where they are!
The Food Making events are held to encourage people to keep practising the traditional recipes, along with newer exciting baking and crafts, showing it can be fun for the family, and cheaper too to make your own. We hope to run great social events where people in Wellington can mingle and meet their neighbours. We use as far as possible locally soured ingredients, such as using apples harvested from the community orchard, or vegetables brought from our gardens.
The group hopes to organise talks, walks, demonstrations etc. If you'd like more information about joining the group or taking part in events contact Helen Gillingham
If you are interested in coming to any of the meetings you can just turn up! At present the Sustainable Food Group meets on the first Wednesday of the month at the Dolphin pub at 7.30pm, sometimes upstairs in their conference room. The Core Group meets on the second Monday of each month at the friends meeting house, at 7.30pm.
